When grandpa is taking the cow to its new home, a bear suddenly attacks them. The bear kills the cow and wound Grandpa. This is a rather great financial loss to Katri's grandparents, so Katri suggests that she can go to working and bring some money for them. Katris grandparents aren't too happy about her suggestion, but Katri is very strong-minded. She makes friends with a boy called Martti, who promises to ask a job for her from his homefarm.
