In the original Japanese script, grandpa is asking to borrow 5, 4, and finally, 3 kappas of wheat. Kappa is a traditional Finnish unit of measure for dry goods, a little under 4.6 litres in size. It's still used at market squares, where potatoes and the like are measured and sold in kappas.
